The Rotary Club of Ignacio’s speaker on September 21 was Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe who is the CEO of the Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Centre.  This Campaign addresses the 95 million desk shortage in sub-Saharan Africa, by aiming to provide 20 million of these environmentally friendly, portable Tutudesks by 2025.

She thanked the RCI for their donation of $12,000 (funded by a combination of grants from the Rotary District and the Rose C. Stone Foundation)--which will provide 1,000 Tutudesks.

Thandi (to her friends) is a Paul Harris Fellow and was appointed an Ambassador for Women & Girls Empowerment by Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones.

During her presentation, Thandi provided the background on Tutudesks and the positive impact for school children in South Africa. The Tutudesk, or lap desk, provides a hard surface for children to do their schoolwork.  Thandi also provided insights on growing up with a well known father.
